Apple M1 vs M2: Battle of Processors

Jul 11, 2023 Post by Moonpreneur Team0 comments

Apple's switch from Intel processors to its own silicon represented a critical turning point for the tech sector. When the Apple M1 chip was released, Apple demonstrated its capacity to design a very effective and potent processor. However, speculation and interest are currently circling around the Apple M2 microprocessor, next iteration. In this article, we'll compare Apple's M1 and the impending M2, looking at their prospective features, upgrades, and possible effects on Apple's product selection.

Introducing the Revolutionary Performance of the Apple M1 & Apple M2

Released in late 2020, the Apple M1 chip provided remarkable performance and power efficiency. The M1 merged an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine onto a single chip based on ARM architecture.

With an 18% faster CPU, a 35% more powerful GPU, and a 40% faster Neural Engine, M2 enhances the industry-leading performance per watt of M1 by using second-generation 5-nanometer technology.  1 It also offers up to 24GB of quick unified memory and 50% more memory bandwidth than M1.

Performance of GPU Cores for Graphics

The number of GPU cores on the M1 and M2 chips is one of their primary variances.

The M2 processor has 10 cores compared to the M1 chip's 8, which enables the M2 chip to deliver up to 25% more graphics performance than the M1 chip while using the same amount of power. This is especially common when using sophisticated programs or several jobs.

With up to 19 GPU cores—three more than M1 Pro—M2 Pro raises the bar. While M2 Max has up to 38 GPU cores, it is significantly more powerful. Compared to the M1 Max, the graphic speeds are more than 30% quicker.

Speed of CPU Cores

The number of CPU cores has an impact on the processor's speed. Both the M1 and the M2 feature 8 CPU cores and 8 threads, but the M2 has a higher maximum clock speed of 3.5 GHz than the M2, which is 3.20 GHz. In other words, the M2 processor uses the same amount of energy while delivering 18% quicker CPU performance.

The M1 Pro or M1 Max both have a 10-core CPU, so you may choose one of those if you want a little bit more speed and efficiency.

Want to step it up a notch? The 12-core CPU is offered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max.

Memory

The amount of memory that each chip supports is another distinction between the two chips. While the M2 chip supports 24 GB of memory, the M1 chip can support up to 16 GB of unified memory. This is a 50% improvement in memory bandwidth.

The memory controller on the M2 can also handle 100GB of unified memory, which greatly boosts the M1's 68.25GB memory bandwidth. Because of this, the M2 chip will be able to handle workloads and applications that are more demanding, such as video editing, 3D rendering, and gaming.

Again, the new M2 Pro and M2 Max outperform the previous versions thanks to their 32GB of quick unified memory and 96GB of unified memory, respectively.

Conclusion:

Apple's unrelenting pursuit of innovation and quality in the field of custom silicon is exemplified by the competition between the current M1 chip and the impending M2 chip. The M1 set a high standard for performance and power efficiency, and the M2 is expected to push those limits even further.

Users may anticipate even more potent, effective, and capable gadgets in the future as Apple continues to develop its own silicon. The Apple M2 processor is ready to give a considerable performance boost, whether it is in the MacBook series, iMac, Mac Pro, or even iOS devices, ushering in a new era of computing powered by Apple's own hardware.
